How to Get Generational Growth in Disciple Making Movements

(This article is adapted from Cindy Anderson's article).

They were a faithful and passionate team of local workers.  They shared the gospel often and led people to the Lord.  They worked hard.  They had started 10 1st generation groups of disciples.  Not too bad by most peoples’ standards. Generational growth in disciple making had not yet begun though.

Train New Disciples to GO

The key to multiplying disciples is to train new disciples to obey Jesus' command and GO to reach and begin discipling others.

Yes, new disciples must continue to grow spiritually. Therefore they are part of a Discovery Bible Process where they are learning from God and obeying what they learn.

But while they are maturing in the Word, they must also learn to GO from Day One!

Discovery Verses. How Long is Required to Train a New Disciple to Go?

Remaining Focused on Strategy B

From a talk presented by Emmanuel Mugisha in Kampala:

In Luke 15:3 we are encouraged to leave the 99 and go out to look for the one that is lost. There are a lot of migrants in our Strategy A churches from other churches, and we are happy and even clap hands that they have joined us. No interviews, no consulting their pastor but only welcome them. Yet the strategy that Jesus gives us is to go out and look for the person of peace.

Keys to Movements that Multiply

Here are some important keys to seeing disciple multiplying disciples, groups multiplying groups, and leaders raised up who know how to multiply disciples:

Movement Essentials

Following are essentials that must be put into place in order to see disciple-making movements that multiply to fourth and fifth generation:

  1. Prayer. Ask for the nations (Psalm 2:8). We need to prayer walk and possess the territory given to us by God. Pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and that signs and wonders will be done in His name. (Acts 2: 17-18; 4: 29-30). Pray and prepare laborers. (Matt. 9:37-38)
  2. Set Goals and Plan! Paul ran with focus and a goal. (Philippians 3:14). Share your plan and report your results as the disciples did. (Luke 10:17)

Sow Abundantly

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 2 Corinthians 9:6

SOW ABUNDANTLY - PLANT MANY SEEDS

Do not be content with one or two or three new DBS groups. Remember, this is a LIFESTYLE of finding new persons of peace and starting new groups. NOT all groups will obey and reproduce (second and third generations). So you must plant MANY seeds and MANY new groups with MANY new disciples.

Overcoming the 4th Generation Barrier

Neil Cole writes:

I believe the proof of multiplication is found in the fourth generation. 2 Timothy 2:2 is the key verse about multiplying disciples in the New Testament.

Thinking About Reproducibility at Every Level

And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. Acts 6:7

Developing Leaders Within the Movement

It is important to understand from the beginning, as disciples begin to multiply, that the movement will only be as strong as the leaders who are developed from those disciples.

These 7 Principles for Developing Leaders are adapted from Cindy Anderson's excellent post:

1. Develop close relationships and community with your most fruitful leaders.

Understanding Levels of Leadership

In order to facilitate a movement you need to understand the different levels of the leaders that you have developed. These levels are not position or hierarchy. Rather, they are levels of fruitfulness that different leaders have arrived at. When you understand these levels of leadership, then you can learn how to move leaders from one level to the next.

Let us look at these levels, and then we can further explore how this understanding can help us.
